KEY NOTE SPEAKER – FRANK BRUNO MBE, BRITISH PROFESSIONAL BOXER
This year’s guest really needs no introduction however just to refresh your memory.
Frank Bruno MBE first became noticed as a young strong south London lad who was winning all of his fight in the Amateur ranks becoming the Youngest ABA Heavyweight boxer a record he was proud of. The call of turning professional soon came knocking on his door and he then had a number of professional fights winning easily to become the European champion.
The public soon got to know Frank was more than just a boxer when he started appearing as a guest on many National TV chat shows including Wogan, Freddie Starr, this is your life etc with appearances on the Royal Variety show, and rubbing shoulders with the “faces” of the 1980s’ and 90s including a lot of royal invitations.
For those who did not follow boxing, the fights against Mike Tyson made Frank a national celebrity and Frank followed his managers advise of creating a personality outside of boxing and soon Frank was seen on many TV programmes appearing in Pantomime and the phrase “Know wot I mean Arry” became part of the English language! Frank had one last chance of becoming World Champion and in September 1995 beat Oliver McCall to become World Champion. Since retiring from boxing Frank became a regular on TV chat shows TV and Radio adverts.
Frank hit the headlines in 2003 2012 & 2014 suffering from Mental Breakdowns, following his last section Frank was very vocal about the treatment he received and decided to “speak out” for the thousands who suffer in silence either as a patient or a carer. He is now seen as a mental Health campaigner advising large organisations. Government agencies use Frank’s advice and experiences to try and improve the problems with Mental Health treatment in the UK.
Frank now has his own Foundation and in August 2019 obtained premises for Non-contact boxing training and also a Boxing club which he hopes to open in 2020 after refurbishment.
