A British entrepreneur will tell Newham students this week how he developed a global business network. Dave Bance, chairman of the Bance Group, will spend two and a half hours at Newham College’s East Ham campus on Friday 2 December, between 1-3.30pm.
Newham College students created West End-style spectaculars during performances at a recent international festival of young people’s skills.

London City Airport celebrates its 23rd birthday today. To commemorate this special day the Airport, with Air France subsidiary CityJet, hosted festivities on the London-Paris, Orly route. Passengers were able to truly have their cake and eat it!

London City Airport welcomed its 30 millionth passenger, yesterday. The outstanding milestone was reached when passenger, Dr. Paul Thind, departed on flight LX457 to Zurich at 12.45.
To mark the occasion, London City Airport and Swiss International Airlines (SWISS) hosted a celebration in the gate lounge for all passengers travelling to Zurich on this flight. The lucky 30 millionth passenger received a special treat, a bottle of champagne, along with a pair of return business class tickets to Switzerland from London City Airport, courtesy of SWISS.

CityJet has announced that they are extending their summer season route from London City to Brive, Dordogne until the end of October 2010. CityJet will operate a return flight out of City Airport on Fridays and Sundays from 17 September to 31 October giving Londoners an extra six weeks to enjoy the convenient service that has opened up direct access to the Dordogne region for the first time.
The CityJet route to Brive, which was started on 25 June 2010, was initially planned to operate until 12 September 2010. In its fifth week of operation, however, CityJet was achieving a load factor of 75% proving there is a high demand for flights to this holiday destination. In addition to leisure travellers, the route has become an ideal link for the many Londoners who own a second home in the scenic region.
Prices start from £59 one way, including taxes. The route will continue to operate using an Avro RJ85.

East Ham MP Stephen Timms left hospital today (May 19th), unaided, with strict orders from doctors to “return home and rest”.

West Ham United and Newham Council are jointly bidding for the Olympic Stadium after the 2012 event.
The proposal was submitted to the Legacy Board today (May 17th).
The Upton Park ground will be redeveloped with shops, homes and community facilities, if the plan is accepted.
The original idea of athletics at the stadium will remain. It will stage national and international meetings and Newham & Essex Beagles, including 400m Olympic gold medalist Christine Ohuruogu, will train there, along with community athletes.
Chamber of Commerce members Newham College of Further Education and the University of East London are among those backing the project.
Student Roshonara Choudhary, 21, of Central Park Road, East Ham, has been remanded in custody to the Old Bailey on June 1st by Stratford magistrates today, accused of attempting to murder East Ham MP Stephen Timms.
She is also charged with possession of offensive weapons – two kitchen knives.
West Ham and England goalkeeper Rob Green escaped injury when his car was in an accident in Harford Street, Mile End, on Saturday (May 15th).
The driver and passenger of the other vehicle went to hospital, but were found to be also uninjured.
It was a “full house” for Labour as they swept to a 60-0 clean sweep in the Newham Council elections. Mayor Sir Robin Wales was re-elected by a huge majority.
East Ham MP Stephen Timms is recovering in The Royal London Hospital after being stabbed twice in the stomach by a knife-wielding woman as he held a surgery on Friday (May 14th) at The Globe Centre, Kingsford Way, Beckton – his first since the General Election.
A 21-year-old woman has been arrested.
A security guard wrestled the woman away from the MP and an aide to Mr Timms, Andrew Bazeley, snatched the knife from her hands.
Mr Timms is in a “stable condition”. His 27,826 majoirty in the election is the largest in the new House of Commons.
Newham Council is reviewing future security arrangements but a spokesman said: “You cannot vet people who attend such surgeries.”
The woman had booked in advance to see Mr Timms. It is not known why she attacked him.
It’s no change in Newham’s Parliamentary representation after General Elections results in East Ham and West Ham constituencies.
Stephen Timms, in East Ham, won 70.4% of the votes with a 27,826 majority. Turnout was 55.6%.
Lyn Brown won 62.7% of votes cast and a majority of 22,534. Turnout was 55%.
Former Newham MP Jim Fitzpatrick won 40% of the vote in Poplar and Limehouse and gained a 6,030 majority over Conservative opponent Tim Archer. The seat was the Conservatives’ number 103 target seat. Turnout was 62.3%.
March 17, 2010 – Green Street jewellers will announce the planned launch of the “Discover Jewellery” magazine at the Newham Business Forum at West Ham football ground on Thursday evening.
The magazine, which will be launched to coincide with London Jewellery Week held from 7 – 13 June 2010, is the first jewellery magazine published by South Asian jewellers in east London.
The Green Street Jewellers’ Association (GSJA), which is publishing the magazine, groups British-Asian retail jewellers on Green Street in Newham who are branding themselves ahead of the 2012 London Olympics.
The magazine will help Newham authorities achieve their goal of creating more jobs for local people, said Jayant Raniga, a spokesman for the GSJA.
“Our magazine is about changing the public perception about jewellery in Green Street. We want people to see that our products are cutting-edge. We’re promoting British design.”
The magazine will help establish Green Street as a jewellery quarter and will ultimately lead to more job opportunities for local people in design, craftsmanship, sales and other areas.
The “Discover Jewellery” magazine will contain articles about 15 retail jewellers on Green Street, as well as an article on the “Bridal Walk”, a guide to the area’s jewellers.
The publication will also feature educational articles on the jewellery making process, with contributions from leading industry bodies, such as Platinum Guild International, the World Gold Council, the Gemmological Institute of America and the London Assay Office.
“Discover Jewellery” will also include an article from India’s Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), looking at how diamonds are processed in India.
“Discover Jewellery” will be published twice a year and will have a free distribution of 60,000 copies across Canary Wharf and residential districts in West Essex, and will appear as a supplement in Asian bridal magazines.
The magazine has attracted strong interest from advertisers from among leading luxury brands.

Gallions Reach Shopping Park in Beckton is delighted to announce the appointment of Catherine Goddard as their new Centre Manager.
Catherine was previously employed at London City Airport where she was Commercial Development Manager. Prior to this she gained several years’ retail management experience, including 10 years with Selfridges and latterly with The Liberty Shopping Centre in Romford.
Catherine, who lives locally in Dagenham, commented: "I look forward to the challenges ahead and in particular to working closely with the retailers at the Park and the community of Newham in establishing Gallions as their retail destination".
